Every Florida Book Project
Are there really only three plays set in Florida? It seems that way.
My instincts tell me I haven't found all the Florida plays out there. Of the three, two are famous: Anna in the Tropics won the Pulitzer Prize and Key Largo was made into a movie with Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson and Lauren Bacall. I'm convinced there must be more, lesser-known plays out there, I just haven't found them.
Consider this dilemma: on the Internet Theater Database there is no way to search for plays based on their setting. This is probably because plays are meant to be performed, not read. Plays are not static entities like novels or films -- more than one version exist at a time and they are constantly reinvented with every performance. So on ITD you can search for specific performances at specific theaters, but not for a play's setting. Also, the limitations of the stage mean a play usually takes place in a room or series of rooms, and rooms can exist anywhere in time and space. Maybe setting isn't that important in theater.
So I am stuck. Lovers of Florida and theater aficionados, I'm asking for your help. Share your knowledge and let's find the other Florida plays out there.
